Midfielder hangs up his boots after failing to shake off injury
MK Dons midfielder Paul Mitchell has been forced to announce his retirement following medical advice.
The 27-year-old has failed to fully recover from a badly broken leg and ankle suffered nearly two years ago.
The impact on his physical wellbeing, despite a spirited battle to return to fitness, has been judged too great for him to continue his career.
A former captain of the Dons, Mitchell will now take up a community ambassador role at the club.
"Obviously I'm disappointed to be forced into retirement at such a young age, but at the same time I'm really excited about the chance to work with MK Dons SET and the football club in a new position," he told the club's
official website.
"Every player would like to go on playing for as long as possible, especially past the age of 27, but I'm lucky enough to remain involved with a club that has been fantastic to me during my time here.
"I'm incredibly grateful to the chairman, the staff, my team-mates and the fans for their support.
"It's a new challenge for me, and I'm looking forward to applying my talents to a different area of the football club and strengthening our position in the local community."
