Howard Wilkinson has been named as Sheffield Wednesday's new technical advisor.

Third spell at Hillsborough for former Owls player and coach

Howard Wilkinson has been named as Sheffield Wednesday's new technical adviser. The former England coach enjoyed five successful years as manager at Hillsborough in the 1980s, overseeing a successful period in the club's history. Having left the Owls in 1988 he went on to take in spells at Leeds and Sunderland, as well as becoming part of the coaching set-up for the national side. Having been involved in football for over 40 years, the 65-year-old brings with him a wealth of knowledge, and Wednesday are keen to tap into that experience. "This is an exciting development and an instance of Wednesday people getting involved with the club to move us forward," new Owls chairman Lee Strafford told the club's official website. "Howard brings with him a world class CV and will support myself and Nick Parker in developing the long-term strategy for the infrastructure of this football club. ''He is a very supportive person and this is a great move which adds value to everything we are doing. Howard will act as an advisor to the board as we figure out how to produce the infrastructure that will allow Brian Laws and Sean McAuley to best fulfil the potential of our football operations."

Influence

Wilkinson, who began his playing career with Wednesday in 1962, was most recently involved in club football as technical director at League Two outfit Notts County. He is currently chairman of the League Managers Association and will retain that position despite accepting a new role with the Owls. Wilkinson said: ''I am very pleased to be working with Sheffield Wednesday in a formal capacity once again and I am keen to help Lee Strafford and the club's board implement changes which will help the Owls flourish again. Manager Laws added: ''Howard's wealth of experience will help drive this club forward. "He is not coming in to change the training ground or the team, he is purely and simply here to support the board, using his influence and experience to drive the club in the right direction."
