Abbott opens arms to former Brunton Park favourite

League One side Carlisle United have offered Matt Jansen a route back into football at Brunton Park. The 31-year-old had been training at Blackburn Rovers in a bid to convince then boss Paul Ince he was ready for a return to the game having quit football two years ago. Jansen failed to win a permanent stay at Rovers but has been offered a possible return by another of his former clubs Carlisle. "I said to him that I am at the end of the phone if you ever need to pick it up and consider Carlisle," United boss Greg Abbott told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph. "If he decided he wanted to train with us and get his appetite back, then you never know where it could lead." Jansen, who began his career with Carlisle, joined Blackburn for more than £4million from Crystal Palace in 1999. But a motorcycle accident, which nearly killed him, severely hampered his career and he failed to recapture the sort of form which saw him almost make the England World Cup squad in 2002.
