Roma defender Christian Panucci has apologised for his actions which led to him nearly walking out on the club in the January transfer window.
But after a move to Hull City failed to materialise on deadline day the Italian international has accepted that he is stuck at the Stadio Olimpico until the end of the season at least.
Panucci reacted angrily to being named on the bench for a recent Serie A game with Napoli, prompting manager Luciano Spalletti to leave him out of the squad altogether.
The 35-year-old's apology has come too late however as the former Chelsea man has been axed from the club's 25-man squad for the UEFA Champions League.
In the wake of the fall-out Spalletti signed defender Marco Motta so even though Panucci has made amends he is not guaranteed a first-team place.
Apology
"I publicly ask to be excused by the fans, the club and my team-mates," he told
ANSA.
"I would like to thank the fans and my team-mates who stood by me, but I don't want to excuse my responsibility or try and justify my error.
"As I have always done in my life, I will assume my responsibility and make myself available to the team and the coaching staff till the end of the season.
"I've been at Roma for eight years and I would be honoured to remain here till I retire."
Panucci's current contract is set to run out at the end of the current campaign.
