AZ Alkmaar's run of 11 consecutive wins came to an end as they drew 2-2 with PSV Eindhoven, enabling FC Twente to narrow the gap at the top to nine points.
AZ Alkmaar have been in irresistible form of late and they surged into a two-goal lead at
PSV Eindhoven courtesy of early goals from Gill Swerts (12) and Maarten Martens (29).
However, PSV had a proud unbeaten record of their own to protect and they were not about to surrender at the halfway stage.
Danny Koevermans reduced PSV's arrears on 49 minutes and the same player struck again six minutes from time to make it 12 matches since their last defeat.
FC Twente had to come from behind to see off bottom club
FC Volendam 2-1 and extend their unbeaten sequence to 13 games.
Paul de Lange put Volendam ahead from the penalty spot after six minutes but the turning point came when Gerry Koning was shown a red card 12 minutes later.
Marko Arnautovic equalised for Steve McClaren's side on 28 minutes and Blaise N'Kufo then scored a penalty in the 34th minute.
