Missed chances for Irons pair Hooper and Hayes
Goals from Theo Robinson and Alan McCormack earned Southend a 2-0 win against Scunthorpe to make it four wins out of five games for Steve Tilson's side.
The Shrimpers made their pressure count in the 54th minute when an Anthony Grant pass allowed Robinson to beat the offside trap.
Goalkeeper Joe Murphy advanced and went down early, with the on-loan Watford forward slotting home into an empty net.
And with three minutes left, Southend grabbed their second goal when Lee Barnard's shot came off a defender and McCormack was on hand to fire into the bottom right-hand corner from six yards.
Southend tested the makeshift Iron rearguard - which was without a first-choice back four due to injury and suspension - throughout the match and saw Murphy and his back-line keep out several efforts.
But the Iron had their chances too with Gary Hooper being denied twice by good saves from Steve Mildenhall, and Paul Hayes heading against the crossbar.
