McClaren's side close the gap on AZ

Twente have closed the gap on AZ Alkmaar after beating Groningen while the Eredivisie leaders were held by Feyenoord. AZ began the day a whopping 11 points clear of Steve McClaren's Twente, but that gap is now down to nine points after they could only muster a goalless draw against Feyenoord. Twente capitalised on AZ's slip-up with a 2-1 success over 10-men Groningen. The visitors were up against ten men when Andreas Granqvist was given his marching order just 12 minutes into the contest. Eljero Elia opened the scoring with Peter Wisgerhof's second half effort confirming the destination of the three points. Marcus Berg pulled one back for Groningen late on, but it proved nothing more than a consolation. Ajax have cemented the place in third in the table with a comfortable 3-0 away win at NAC Breda. Thomas Vermaelen, Gregory van der Wiel and Luis Suarez were all on target for the Dutch giants. Second half goals from Andres Oper and Cisse Sekou lifted Roda JC over ADO Den Haag while Volendam's clash against Utrecht finished goalless.
