Georgian coach resigns as manager of Cypriot side

Temuri Ketsbaia has resigned from his position as coach of Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta. The club's board were keen to retain the services of the former Newcastle and Wolves midfielder, but the Georgian handed in his notice on Monday evening. The 41-year-old has made it clear that his decision is final and Anorthosis have been forced to reluctantly accept his departure. "The board at first did not accept his resignation and asked him to withdraw the decision to step down from the post," read a statement on the club's official website. "Mr Ketsbaia maintained his position that the decision is final. "He added that the decision was taken after much consideration and to serve the best interests of the club. "The board unanimously expressed its regret at the decision of Temuri Ketsbaia. We thank Mr Ketsbaia for all his work as he was the main factor in this year's great success in the Champions League." ] Ketsbaia took the reins at Anorthosis in 2004, initially as player-manager, and this season became the first man to lead a Cypriot club into the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
