Twente book second spot

Steve McClaren's FC Twente secured second spot in the Eredivisie after a 3-0 win over champions AZ Alkmaar. Twente romped to victory, whilst Ajax in third were soundly beaten 4-0 by Sparta Rotterdam - who are now safe after picking up the three points. After a goalless first half at the Arke Stadion, Twente went ahead on 47 minutes through Kenneth Perez. Peter Wisgerhof doubled their advantage on the hour, just moments after AZ were reduced to ten-men when Gill Swerts was dismissed. The win was sealed 12 minutes from time when Eljero Elia pounced. Ajax could have taken the battle for second into the final day of the season but they were humbled in Rotterdam by Sparta. Edouard Duplan put Sparta ahead just before the break and Yuri Rose doubled that advantage on the stroke of half-time. Ajax's day went form bad to worse when Spaniard Oleguer was dismissed on 76 minutes and just moments later Joshua John made it 3-0. The emphatic win was sealed in the final minute when Dele Adeleye pounced. Ajax's third-place spot is now in danger going into the last game as PSV Eindhoven moved to within three points of them. Although things could and should have been so much better for PSV - who were held to a 1-1 draw at home by NEC Nijmegen, whilst also having two-men sent off in the process. Danko Lazovic slotted home from the penalty spot just after half-time, but he was then sent-off just minutes later. Edison Mendez joined him in the dressing room as he saw red eight-minutes from time and PSV just could not hang on as Tim Janssen pounced in injury time. Feyenoord moved into seventh after a 1-1 draw at FC Utrecht. Tom Caluwe put Utrecht ahead on 14 minutes, but veteran Dane Jon Dahl Tomasson levelled on the half-hour. Sander Keller restored Utrecht's lead just after the hour, but again it did not last as Feyenoord youngster Georginio Wijnaldum fired home. At the bottom - Roda JC have dropped to the foot of the table and they cannot now escape the bottom three after they were beaten at home by Willem II. The match in Kerkrade ended in heartbreak for Roda as they looked set to claim a goalless draw until two minutes into added time when Niels Vorthoren pounced. Roda moved bottom because of De Graafschap - who claimed an excellent 1-0 win at NAC Breda. Again the winner came deep in stoppage time when Oussama Assaidi fired home. FC Volendam sunk to second from bottom as they were also undone by a last-gasp goal against FC Groningen. This time four minutes into injury time, Tim Matavz scored to win it - which secures Groningen a sixth-place finish after NAC's defeat. De Graafschap still fill the final relegation play-off spot but they are level with Den Haag - who threw away a two-goal lead at Heerenveen. Two goals in as many minutes from Csaba Horvath and Lex Immers gave Den Haag a 2-0 goal at the interval. Heerenveen then missed a penalty through Danijel Pranic just after the break. But the fifth-placed Frisians were not to be denied as Paulo Henrique (79) and Kristian Bak Nielsen (87) scored. The only other club who could be dragged into the relegation play-offs is Heracles - who are just two points ahead of De Graafschap and Den Haag. Heracles could not get anything from their match at Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday as they succumbed to a late strike from Lasse Nilsson.
