Benfica have announced that Quique Flores has been sacked as manager after just 12 months in the job.
The decision was made at a board meeting on Sunday with many suggesting that Flores' inability to guide the club into next season's UEFA Champions League was ultimately his downfall.
The Lisbon club finished third behind city rivals Sporting and champions Porto and fans at the Estadio da Luz will have to make do without Champions League football for a second successive season.
Not even the club's League Cup success could save the Spaniard his job after he had taken over from Jose Antonio Camacho last summer.

The former Valencia boss should not be out of work for long though, with his name already associated with the Betis and Sevilla posts.
Benfica have refused to reveal how much compensation they have offered Flores but it is believed that it is below the €3.5million stipulated in the 44-year-old's contract.
Sporting de Braga's manager Jorge Jesus is favourite to take over from Flores with reports suggesting he could be in place as early as Monday.
