Former midfielder set to take Tranmere job
John Barnes has been replaced as Jamaica boss after just seven months in charge, and has now set his sights on the vacant position at Tranmere.
He was appointed last November on a short-term deal until the end of the CONCACAF Gold Cup next month.
The former Liverpool man has now been succeeded by Theodore Whitmore after being told his contract would not be renewed.
The decision has been made by the Jamaican Football Federation to allow Whitmore to prepare fully for the upcoming tournament.
Barnes, who failed to guide the Reggae Boyz to World Cup qualification, admits he is sad to be leaving his post.
But the 45-year-old is expected to be named as the new manager of Tranmere following Ronnie Moore's dismissal last week.
"Yes, I am disappointed that I would not be going to the Gold Cup (in July) because I could have started the contract (with Tranmere) after the Gold Cup," Barnes said.
"But I fully accept and understand the JFF decision that they will appoint Theodore, as of now, to give him a chance to experience football at the highest level.
"I have to thank the JFF for giving me an opportunity in doing something I love. It is something I wanted to get involved with for a long time and they gave me that opportunity."
