Tranmere Rovers have clinched the signing of old boy Alan Mahon on a three-year contract. Skysports.com revealed last week that new Rovers boss John Barnes was weighing up a move for the Republic of Ireland midfielder. Mahon had been available on a free transfer after being released by Burnley and has secured a return to his first club. The 31-year-old played for Tranmere between 1995 and 2000 before joining Sporting Lisbon and is happy to be back at Prenton Park. "I'm thrilled to come back to the club that started my career," Mahon told the club's official website. "The new management team has impressed me and I can't wait to get started." Barnes is delighted that Mahon has agreed to a long-term contract and is confident the player's experience will be vital this season. "It's great to have Alan back as he is a very talented midfielder," said Barnes. "We're fortunate to have got a player of Alan's quality to commit himself to the club for three seasons. He is a former favourite of the Tranmere fans and I'm sure they'll look forward to seeing him in action again at Prenton Park. "He will add experience to what will be a young squad next season."
