You have voted in your thousands for the best player to wear a Sheffield Wednesday shirt and the winner is .... Chris Waddle. We asked fans of each of the 92 English League teams and Scottish Premier League sides to nominate their all-time favourite footballers and Waddle topped the poll. Legendary striker David Hirst came in second while Italian maverick Paolo Di Canio was third in the voting.

Chris Waddle

Waddle arrived at Hillsborough from Marseille in 1992, having already had long spells with Newcastle and Tottenham. But suggestions that his career could be drawing towards a close were quickly brushed aside as Waddle demonstrated that he was still one of the most exciting wingers in the game. He produced a series of sparkling performances in his first season with the Yorkshire club and was voted the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year in 1993 after helping the Owls reach both domestic cup finals. Waddle eventually moved on in 1996 but not before he had made more than 100 appearances and given supporters some great memories with his skilful dribbling and fantastic long-range shooting.

David Hirst

Wednesday's greatest hour was arguably their League Cup triumph against Manchester United in 1991 and Hirst was a key part of this success. Hirst, who spent more than 11 years with Wednesday and netted over 100 goals, was regarded as a complete centre-forward who could use both feet and had pace, height and strength.

Paolo Di Canio

Di Canio joined the Owls for a transfer fee of £4million but he repaid the faith shown in him by making a big impact with both his football and his personality. An attacking playmaker blessed with immense talent, Di Canio scored a number of spectacular goals during a two-year stint with Wednesday.
