Besiktas keeper warns United what to expect at Inonu Stadium
Rustu Recber has warned Manchester United that the atmosphere on Tuesday will be like nothing they have ever experienced before.
The Besiktas goalkeeper was a member of the Fenerbahce side that lost 6-2 to United in the UEFA Champions League in 2004 and sees their paths cross once more at the Inonu Stadium in midweek.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side have experience of playing in Turkey before, especially in the 1990s when they played a number of games at Galatasaray's cauldron of noise the Ali Sami Yen.
But Rustu insists that the Besiktas supporters, who have developed a reputation as the noisiest in Turkey, will provide an atmosphere to remember on Tuesday.
"The level of hostility is unique," he told the
Sunday Mirror. "United have been to Galatasaray and Fenerbahce but the Besiktas fans are in a league of their own.
"They are the noisiest, the most passionate, and they stay with the team for 90 minutes. The noise is incredible. It will be a new experience even for those United players who think they have seen everything.
"Our fans can really make it hell."
Regret
The 36-year-old stopper also revealed that he could have joined the Premier League champions in 2002 but chose Barcelona instead, a decision he still regrets to this day.
"There was an opportunity to go to England. My agent spoke to Sir Alex and he wanted me as his goalkeeper," he added.
"In the end I allowed my heart to rule my head and I joined Barcelona. But my experience there was a bitter one and looking back I should have gone to England."
