Sheffield Wednesday plans are approved
Sheffield Wednesday's expansion plans for Hillsborough have been approved.
The Championship club is looking to undertake a four-year development plan of their ground which will eventually see the capacity rise to 44,000.
Wednesday want to renovate their home which will include the removal of the pillars from their iconic Kop end, an expansion to their hospitality facilities and new learning and community facilities.
"Sheffield City Council has recognised the strong community aspects of our design and we're looking forward to making Sheffield Wednesday an iconic home for our team, our supporters and our community fit for the 21st century," said chairman Lee Strafford.
"All fans would agree that Hillsborough is in need of investment and our next task is to secure funding for the various aspects of our proposals.
"We have already started the grant application process for the West Stand Learning Zone and we are really pleased that we now have the green light to advance our plans with this planning decision."
Wednesday insist that the majority of the £22million needed for the scheme will come from government grants and increased revenue streams.
