Seagulls name Uruguayan as Slade's successor

Brighton have appointed Gus Poyet as their new manager after parting company with Russell Slade earlier this month. Slade's eight-month spell at the helm came to an end following a disappointing start to the season for the Seagulls. A number of high-profile names including Dennis Wise and Steve Coppell were linked with the position but it is Poyet who has been handed the reins. The Uruguayan has been out of work since leaving his post as Tottenham assistant manager in October 2008, while he was Wise's right-hand man at both Swindon and Leeds. He has no previous experience of being the man in charge but Brighton chairman Tony Bloom is excited about what he will bring to the role at the Withdean Stadium. "Gus is one of the best up and coming young coaches in this country," Bloom told the club's official website. "We are delighted to give him his first opportunity in management. "His credentials are exceptional and all of the reports we have had on his coaching ability are outstanding. "I am certain he will be a big success with the Albion." Poyet's former Tottenham team-mate Mauricio Taricco also comes in as his assistant and they will face Southampton away from home in their first game this weekend.
