Hitzfeld sees World Cup qualifiers lose 11-game unbeaten record

John Carew's second-half minute penalty ended Switzerland's 11-game unbeaten run as Norway won 1-0 in Geneva. Switzerland were aiming to build on qualification for the 2010 World Cup with victory over Norway, who missed out on a play-off spot. But it was the Norwegians who nicked the win in the 48th minute with a trio of Premier League-based players involved in the goal. Blackburn Rovers winger Morten Gamst Pedersen was brought down in the box by Liverpool full-back Philipp Degen and Aston Villa striker Carew tucked away the spot-kick. Switzerland offered little throughout the game as Ottmar Hitzfeld suffered just the second defeat of his reign as coach.
