Lyon humbled after Valenciennes loss

Paris St Germain narrowly fended off Arles while Sochaux pulled off a surprise win over Rennes. Lyon suffered a humiliating defeat against relegation candidates Valenciennes. Two goals in eight minutes from Milan Bisevac and Gregory Pujol put the home side in a strong position. Lyon pulled one back through Michel Bastos 20 minutes from time but failed to find a leveller. Ligue 1 leaders Lille pulled off a 1-0 win over RC Lens in the late kick-off at the Metropole. Substitute Vinicius De Melo stepped off the bench to fire the home side ahead on 69 minutes to maintain a four-point lead at the top of the table for his team. Paris Saint Germain edged past bottom side Arles 2-1. Mevlut Erdinc was on target twice for the second-placed side, who were forced to endure a nervous finale after Deme N'Diaye pulled one back. Mid-table Sochaux ended a recent poor run of form by firing five past title-chasing Rennes in a 5-1 win. Modibo Maiga netted twice against a Rennes side reduced to ten men following the dismissal of keeper Nicolas Douchez. Caen shrugged off their recent inconsistent form to beat Auxerre 2-0. Second-half goals from Benjamin Nivet and Kandia Traore left Auxerre languishing dangerously close to the drop zone. Brest were unable to snap a five-game winless streak at Lorient who would up comfortable 2-0 winners. Striker Kevin Gameiro grabbed both goals in the space of seven minutes. Saint-Etienne made great strides in the tight battle for a Europa League place by beating rivals Toulouse 2-1. A Bakary Sako double was enough, with the away side only managing a consolation through Franck Tabanou.
