Patrick Helmes and Thomas Kahlenberg both told they are not needed

Patrick Helmes and Thomas Kahlenberg could both be on their way out of Wolfsburg after finding themselves on the fringes this season. Helmes has been told by Wolfsburg manager Felix Magath that he is surplus to requirements at the Volkswagen Arena. The German is contracted to Wolfsburg until June 2014. He only joined the club in January 2011 from Bayer Leverkusen for around £4.5million. He was signed by Steve McClaren, but has been unable to hold down a first team place under Helmes. The Wolfsburg boss feels that the striker does not work hard enough for the team to warrant inclusion. He told 11 Freunde magazine: "Patrick Helmes is a pure goal scorer, he has never learned how to defend and never had to work to get opportunities in front of goal. "Playing such a sort of player only makes sense if the main direction of your team is to attack. "

Kahlenberg exit

Thomas Kahlenberg is also set to leave the Volkswagen Arena when the transfer window opens in January.. The Danish international has also been told by Magath that he is not needed and has been training with the reserves. He joined the club in 2009 from Auxerre and played 26 times in the league in his debut season, but this season has not featured at all. Kahlenberg told Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung: "We are actually working on a transfer during the winter period. "It is a difficult job as I am in the reserves of Wolfsburg at this moment in time and it is a problem since no one is looking at me playing reserve team football. "I have yet to receive any concrete offers, still there is some time left before the window opens. I don't want to move back to Denmark. "I played in France for four years and people there should be aware of my abilities. Maybe we can work something out there. "Morten Olsen (the Denmark national coach) phoned me to tell me I would be a candidate to go to Euro 2012 if I get myself a new club and get playing regular first team football."
