Ajax coach still coming to terms with Champions League exit

Frank de Boer concedes Ajax must accept their European fate, with it difficult to see how any investigation would uncover evidence of match-fixing. The Dutch giants are still coming to terms with their shock exit from the UEFA Champions League. They entered the final round of fixtures on Wednesday sat second in Group D and seemingly set for a place in the last 16. Events conspired against them, though, and they are now preparing themselves for Europa League football in 2012. A 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid, coupled with Lyon's remarkable 7-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb, saw them crash out of the Champions League. De Boer is struggling to comprehend how such results came to pass, but admits it would be virtually impossible to say if any of their rivals resorted to underhand tactics.

Exception

"On this stage a 7-1 away win is an exception," said the Ajax boss. "Maybe I'm naïve when I think it normally doesn't work like this, but if Zagreb gave the match away they should be punished. "But I think it is hard to find any evidence in this case." UEFA have already announced that they consider everything to have been above board, with there no plans to launch an investigation into the freak result in Zagreb. French betting authorities launched a probe on Thursday, but they too have discovered nothing suspicious.
