Team GB will not include England's Euro 2012 participants

The Football Association has announced that any England player selected for Euro 2012 will not be eligible for Team GB at the London Olympics. Fears had been raised by leading figures, in particular Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, regarding international burn-out. With Euro 2012 already set to dominate the summer for England's brightest stars, turning out in a second major tournament would push them to breaking point. Team GB are due to take in their first Olympic fixture on 26th July, a little over three weeks after the European Championships come to close. With it important for those involved to recharge their batteries before the start of the new domestic campaign, the decision has been taken to rule out the possibility of dual involvement.

Sensible

Stuart Pearce, the man charged with the task of leading Team GB at the 2012 Olympics, believes the authorities have made the right call. In a statement released on the FA's official website, he said: "We have had discussions as we come now to notifying the long list of the players who could potentially be selected and it is important to make clear what we have agreed regarding England players who will be at Euro 2012. "We have agreed that any player who boards the plane to the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine will not be considered for selection to Team GB. "It's a sensible football decision when you consider the demands on players, and it now leaves no room for doubt for players and their clubs about next summer and the two major tournaments."
