Red Devils distance themselves from reported interest in Benfica ace

Manchester United have moved to distance themselves from suggestions they are interested in Benfica playmaker Nicolas Gaitan. The Argentina international's agent, Jose Irribaran, claimed on Monday that initial discussions had been held between the two clubs over his client. It had been reported that Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed by the 23-year-old's performances in the two UEFA Champions League meetings between the Portuguese side and the Red Devils this season. Gaitan started in both games as Benfica held United home and away to progress to the last 16 as group winners, while Ferguson's men were dumped into the Europa League, with a distinct lack of creativity one criticism levelled in their direction. But the speculation claiming that a move to the North West is on the cards has drawn a strong reaction from the Red Devils hierarchy. It has been stressed by senior United officials that Ferguson has expressed no interest in Gaitan and will not be doing so in the future, with the chances of the player ending up at Old Trafford currently zero.
