Sunderland man gets reward for winning his fitness battle
Fraizer Campbell admits he is 'honoured' after being named in the England squad to face Holland next week - just weeks after returning from injury.
The 24-year-old had been sidelined for 18 months after having surgery to repair ligament damage in his knee.
But the former Manchester United man battled back to full fitness and announced his return with a storming performance and a goal, just minutes after coming on as a substitute in Sunderland's 1-1 draw with bitter rivals Middlesbrough in the FA Cup recently.
And Campbell has been rewarded for all his hard work by being called into the 25-man squad for the friendly at Wembley on 29th February when he could make his senior debut.
"Absolutely delighted to be part of the England team," he announced on
Twitter. "Been the longest and hardest 18 months of my life and feel truly honoured to be given a chance."
His Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill told the club's
official website: "There are some terrific players there and getting a place in the squad is extremely difficult.
"He has only had a couple of games back. It's a boost, even just to be involved for a few days. It's fantastic. Whether he does or doesn't play, to me, is immaterial at this stage.
"The news is a great boost - I think it would have been a bit of a surprise for him. If he gets the opportunity, it would be great to take it."
