Team of the week
Performance of the weekend
Arsenal 1 Manchester City 0
Manchester City's faint hopes of winning the Premier League may now finally be over after their defeat at Arsenal thanks to Mikel Arteta's arrow of a strike in the 87th minute at the Emirates Stadium.
The victory marked the latest step in the Gunners' resurgence since overhauling Tottenham's 10-point lead in third to now sit two points clear of their North London rivals, who have dropped into the fourth Champions League spot.
Arsene Wenger's side raised their own game and created enough chances to have been well ahead by the time they eventually broke the deadlock with three minutes remaining as Arteta strode forward to smash a superb 25-yard drive past Joe Hart into the bottom corner.
Game of the weekend
Chelsea 2 Wigan 1
Juan Mata's last-minute winner saw Chelsea strengthen their bid for Champions League football next season, as they beat Wigan 2-1 in a thoroughly entertaining encounter at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic volleyed home in the 62nd minute, but Wigan, who remained in the bottom three, equalised when Mohamed Diame struck a fierce drive from the edge of the area with eight minutes remaining.
However, the Blues were not to be denied as they grabbed a late winner when, after Fernando Torres's volley hit the post, the ball struck Mata on the chest and trickled over the line.
Goal of the weekend
Papiss Cisse
Cisse kept up his remarkable scoring record by grabbing both goals in Newcastle's 2-0 win over Swansea on Good Friday.
The Senegal striker put away top-quality finishes in the fifth and 69th minutes to score twice for the third successive match and marked a fourth straight victory for Alan Pardew's side.
Cisse's second goal of the game was particularly eye catching as he collected Yohan Cabaye's intelligent pass before clipping a sensational curling effort over Dutch goalkeeper Michel Vorm from 10 yards, which was very reminiscent of a former Magpies' legend Faustino Asprilla.
The 26-year-old, who joined Newcastle from German team Freiburg in January for a reported £10 million, has now scored nine goals in his first eight games.
Free-kick of the weekend
Clint Dempsey
Dempsey struck twice as Fulham dealt relegation-threatened Bolton's survival chances a blow.
The American took his season's tally to 21 with a superb 30 yard free-kick to open the scoring after Darren Pratley fouled Mahamadou Diarra.
Dempsey was keen to take it ahead of John Arne Riise and Bryan Ruiz and justified his confidence as he connected sweetly to fire the ball over the wall and into the top corner past the despairing dive of Adam Bogdan.
Controversy of the weekend
Chelsea & Manchester United
There was plenty of offside goal controversy in the games involving these two teams.
Roberto Di Matteo's Blues enjoyed a huge slice of fortune to secure victory over struggling Wigan with goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Juan Mata's stoppage-time strike earning a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.
However, Assistant referee Dave Bryan was the latest official to donate to the Chelsea cause, twice failing to raise his flag for goals that replays proved were scored from an offside position.
And Mata said of his winner: "It was a little bit lucky, it's true."
Meanwhile, QPR boss Mark Hughes has claimed Premier League managers are
