Former Spurs boss backs potential successor to be a hit

Harry Redknapp has backed Andre Villas-Boas to finish in at least the top four next season if he succeeds him at Tottenham. The Portuguese tactician is a strong favourite to take over at White Hart Lane just four months after the end of his short spell at Chelsea. Redknapp, who left the club after guiding Spurs to a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League last term, believes Villas-Boas can also finish at least fourth. He told Sky Sports News: "He has been to England. He has been to Chelsea. Things did not work out for him. "The chairman at Tottenham (Daniel Levy) feels that he can do the job at Tottenham. He has certainly got the players. "I think that they have the players there to be a top-four team every year and to challenge for a championship. That is my opinion. They have got the players there."

England derailment

Redknapp has also again denied suggestions that speculation linking him with the then-vacant England post derailed Spurs' season at a crucial point. "It was difficult," he admitted. "Everybody was sticking my name up but it never affected me at Tottenham. "People look back and they say, 'well it did affect the team.' "We just had a spell where everything that could have gone wrong was going wrong. We were playing very, very well. "We played great against Manchester United at home. We went to Everton and played well. We went to QPR and got done when QPR only had one shot on goal. We went to Villa and played with 10 men and drew 1-1 and battered them. "It was just the way it was going. We came back strong in the last four games at the end of the year and picked it up again."
