Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Wayne Rooney's desire to play in England's friendly against Sweden on November 14th.

The United manager has also leapt to the defence of Tom Cleverley, criticised in some quarters after England's lacklustre displat in Warsaw. "I always say this about England, when they get criticised it is usually unfair," added the Scot. "I listened to the radio yesterday morning and they were slaughtering Cleverley. I couldn't have been watching the (same) game because he was the one player who kept the ball moving. "He showed a real degree of experience for a young lad."
