Croatia coach Niko Kovac admitted that Mexico deserved to progress at the World Cup, at their expense, after they lost 3-1 to the North Americans.
Rafael Marquez, Andres Guardado and Javier Hernandez scored as Mexico progressed, with Ivan Perisic claiming a late strike for Kovac's side.
Kovac admits that Croatia, who needed to win to go through to the last 16, could have been more defensive.
"It's a moot point whether we should have kept it 0-0 until the last 10 minutes and then go all-out on the attack," said Kovac.
"We decided to attack earlier but it wasn't successful.
"We kept the game open for a long time, but two corners decided the game.
"We weren't bad but the opponent was better."
Mexico will now meet Holland in the last 16.
