Watford boss Oscar Garcia bemoaned his side's finishing as his reign began with a 1-0 defeat at Charlton, whose boss Bob Peeters was pleased with the determination shown.

Yoni Buyens' early penalty proved the difference as Garcia, who replaced Beppe Sannino, made a losing start.

It was rough justice on the Spaniard, after his side dominated the clash but ended up empty-handed, with Garcia also aggrieved that the Hornets were not awarded a spot-kick of their own following Troy Deeney's collision with Tal Ben Haim in the area.

Garcia said: "On another day we would be comfortable winners.

"There were two clear penalties. The referee has only given one but I have spoken with Troy, who said it was clear.

"It's my sixth day in charge and so I couldn't work with the full squad as they were away on international duty.

"And it's always difficult when you concede so early on.

"But when you have 15 chances to score it just wasn't our day in front of goal. I'm not not worried by this."

He continued: "We wanted to change the performance.

"A lot of people told me this was our best performance which makes me proud.

"I'm disappointed about the result but not the performance.

"With the players we have in front of goal I am not worried by this.

"We will win more matches than we lose if we continue playing like this."

Buyens' third minute spot-kick separated these two sides as Charlton last season's struggles seem a distant memory.

Igor Vetokele was hauled down down by the on-rushing Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes, according to referee Andy Madley, and Charlton batted down the hatches from there on.

Deeney curled an effort against the outside of the post early on before Steven Henderson kept out Ikechi Anya's long-range effort.

But until the final 10 minutes, the Charlton goalkeeper was rarely troubled. First Henderson kept out Daniel Tozser's stinging drive.

And Lloyd Dyer was foiled with just four minutes left by Henderson's smart reaction save to ensure Charlton would cling on.

Charlton manager Bob Peeters said: "It was hard to prepare ourselves as we had players away on international break.

"You are worried how they will come back. Vetokele was tired after a nine hour flight.

"You know they are going to come at us strong in the second half.

"I warned my players that they are a very, very good team. They have a lot of quality so it's a massive result.

"We had to dig deep to see it through."

Peeters has made an impressive start to life in the Charlton dugout but he is refusing to get carried away.

He added: "We are tying to build something at this club.

"We have won three home games now and our opponent knows they have to dig in hard when coming here.

"But out unbeaten start doesn't mean anything.

"The most important thing is we have 12 points from six games and have won three home games in a row.

"My players can enjoy this now and then it's back to business on Monday."
