Sky Bet Championship: Uwe Rosler blasted the referee after Wigan drew with Huddersfield
Tuesday 16 September 2014 23:03, UK
Wigan manager Uwe Rosler slammed the performance of referee Sebastian Stockbridge following his side's 0-0 draw at Huddersfield.
Rosler was disappointed Stockbridge failed to award the Latics a penalty on more than one occasion, and was also quick to defend Callum McManaman who was shown a yellow card by the official after he decided the striker had dived inside the penalty area.
Athletic remain without a win on the road this season but the former Brentford boss insisted a better display from the referee would have brought a different result.
He said: "Three penalty situations tonight - two of them were clear penalties. We didn't get what we deserved.
"The (McManaman) one was clear. Not only that but the second half, two clear handballs - I've seen it on a DVD.
"People try to give Callum a reputation (for diving). He shifted the ball - there was no contact on the ball. There was definitely contact on his leg, so I don't know how the referee can't give a penalty for that, and then book him.
"I think defenders in the final third clearly have a problem trying to handle and obviously they like to go in the ear of the referee. But Callum has to keep doing what he does best, which is taking on defenders.
"Maybe the way he falls is a little bit too much. He needs to try and stay on his feet more. But when there is contact there is contact."
Rosler admitted his side did have enough chances to win the game without intervention from the referee, but, after seeing McManaman earn his side a penalty at Blackburn on Saturday, simply felt Stockbridge's decision was the deciding factor.
He added: "Unfortunately there is a man in black who has to have a decent day. Last week he decides the game in a different way, but today he wasn't helpful for us."
Opposite number Chris Powell was pleased to be off the mark after claiming his first point since taking over the Terriers.
He said: "Considering the way it ended on Saturday, we had a few knocks against Middlesbrough. So the 18 I had tonight were the most senior players available really.
"Obviously pleased with the clean sheet because we haven't had one. I'm pleased for Alex Smithies, because you need those - it definitely gets you a point."
Powell is relishing the opportunity to take part in his first West Yorkshire derby on Saturday when his side visit fierce rivals Leeds.
He added: "I'm looking forward to it, of course. These are the games you want to be involved in. It'll be a test for us on and off the pitch but we've got some unfinished business after what happened there last season (5-1 defeat in February)."
