Arsene Wenger's touchline row with Jose Mourinho came as no surprise given the managers' fractious relationship, according to Nigel Winterburn.

Wenger shoved Mourinho as the Chelsea manager tried to stop him entering the home tehnical area during Arsenal's 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The incident was the latest demonstration of the antipathy between two of football's most high-profile figures, who have regularly crossed swords during Mourinho's two spells in the Premier League.

It got a little heated between Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho following Gary Cahill's challenge on Alexis Sanchez

Wenger is yet to oversee a win against a Mourinho team and was branded "a specialist in failure" by the Portuguese last season.

And speaking on Sky Sports News HQ's Morning View, former Arsenal defender Winterburn said: "I'm not surprised, really. I think he's become very agitated with Jose Mourinho."

Referee Martin Atkinson warned both managers at the time, and Winterburn does not foresee the Football Association taking significantly greater action.

He said: "We have a responsibility as ex-players and managers to set an example to kids, but on the flip side - and I've been involved in incidents myself - for a split second you can lose control and don't know why you've done it.

"It's not massive, but it's enough for us to be talking about so they could get a warning or maybe a fine.

"It does set an example we don't want to see for younger managers coming through, but in terms of the game we're over-hyping it and actually forgetting about how significant the game was."

Arsenal's first league defeat of the season leaves them nine points behind Chelsea already, and former Blues striker Tony Cascarino believes Wenger is paying the price for failing to deal with his side's physical weakness.

He said: "Arsenal were second best again, and physically they're intimidated by the way Chelsea play.

"Arsene refuses to have the kind of side he had - he had Patrick Vieira, Gilberto Silva, the back four that everyone knows about. You knew what Arsenal were about then."
