Sky Bet Championship: Andy Hughes rules himself out of Bolton job contention

Saturday's defeat to Bournemouth may prove to be caretaker manager Andy Hughes' only game in charge of Bolton after he appeared to rule himself out of the running for the job permanently.

The 36-year-old Wanderers player-coach was handed the reigns for the Cherries' 2-1 victory at the Macron Stadium after Dougie Freedman departed on Friday following an early-season slump.

Despite playing against 10 men for 54 minutes, the Whites fell to their latest loss, leaving them rooted to the basement in the Sky Bet Championship going into the international break.

Wanderers will hope to find a new boss in that two-week period and, given his comments on Saturday, Hughes is unlikely to throw his hat into the ring.

"Whoever comes into this club - with that dressing room - they have a chance," he told the club's official website.

"It was an awkward position for me but how could I turn this opportunity down to try and help this wonderful club? We had a go and I know we're on the right road."

Hughes does believe that whoever replaces Freedman at the helm will inherit a club with plenty of potential.

Freedman's hands were somewhat tied when it came to the financial side of things but, in spite of their spiralling debt, Hughes insists Bolton remains an attractive proposition.

"There's going to be a lucky manager coming into this club, with this history," he added.

"He's got a great group of lads and staff.

"I'm sure they've been inundated with an unbelievable amount of managers of high quality.

"It's an enticing job, I think it's one of the best jobs in English football with the history, with the town, with the training ground, and it wouldn't surprise me to see top, top managers."
