Jonjo Shelvey has denied deliberately elbowing Emre Can during Swansea's Monday Night Football defeat at Liverpool.

The midfielder caught Can with a swinging arm during the first half of a 4-1 defeat that left Swansea behind their hosts in the Premier League table.

Shelvey's actions were condemned by his former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher, who called it the sort of "ill discipline" that cut short the player's Anfield career.

But Shelvey, who could face retrospective action if referee Andre Marriner did not see the incident clearly, tweeted in the hours after the game to protest his innocence.

He said: "Just wanna say I didn't intentionally elbow Emre Can - I was just trying to get my arm across to get round him. It's come off as if I'm trying to hurt another player and I can assure you that isn't the case. And I apologised to Emre Can for catching him."

Swansea manager Garry Monk warned Shelvey only this weekend over the seven yellow cards and one red he has accumulated this season, but in the aftermath of the game the manager reserved judgement on the latest incident.

He said: "I haven't seen any replays - I'll have to go back in with the analysts and have a good look, but when I talked about Jonjo it was more the laziness of his challenges.

More from Liverpool V Swansea

"I'll have a look and see what this is, and you trust the authorities will do the right thing."

Carragher was more forthright up in the Monday Night Football studio, saying: "That's why he had to leave the club - it's not down to ability. You'd see things like this two or three times a week in training - he has ill discipline."
