James Wilson admitted he was relieved to end his "struggle" in front of goal to score his first of the season for Manchester United in the 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers.
The 19-year-old had not scored in 12 games this season after bursting on the scene with a brace against Hull City in May.
Wilson scored late on against QPR following a through ball from Angel Di Maria after Marouane Fellaini had opened the scoring for Louis Van Gaal’s men.
And the striker said the Dutchman told him to improve his positional play.
“Basically, he just told me to stay onside,” he told MUTV.
"Because there were a few instances (in previous games) where I've been offside.
“He told me to stay onside, be patient, hold your run and beat them for pace. That's pretty much what I did for my goal."
Wilson added: "It gives me great confidence as I've been struggling for my first goal this season off the back end of last season.
"Hopefully I can take it into the next game and the rest of the season.”
Meanwhile, QPR goalkeeper Robert Green believes the club can take heart from their display against United.
The defeat leaves Harry Redknapp’s men languishing in 19th place in the Barclays Premier League table, with all 19 of their points earned at home.
But Green said their performances against the big teams shows they have what it takes to beat the drop.
"Despite United's late goal, we were in a close encounter," he said.
"Eight games ago when we lost to Liverpool, it was by the odd goal.
"And we've played Man City at Loftus Road, and drawn.
“So we may have some big sides coming here, but we have already shown that the way we play at home gives us a chance in those games."
