Feyenoord recovered from two goals down to beat 10-man Excelsior 3-2 and maintain their pursuit of second place in the Eredivisie.
Tom Van Weert (7 and 30) grabbed a first-half brace to give 14th-placed Excelsior the upper hand but centre-back Jurgen Mattheij's 49th-minute dismissal signalled a turning of the tables.
Colin Kazim-Richards scored from the resulting penalty and goals from substitute Jens Toornstra (78) and Lex Immers (79) subsequently earned Feyenoord all three points.
Fred Rutten's men are now six points behind Ajax while leaders PSV Eindhoven are 20 points away.
PSV were comfortable 3-0 winners over FC Dordrecht at the Philips Stadion thanks to an own goal from Jeffrey Fortes (4) and further strikes from Luuk De Jong's penalty (62) and Jeffrey Bruma (70).
Ajax, meanwhile, drew 1-1 at Willem II with Ali Messaoud (52) securing a point for the hosts after Arkadiusz Milik had opened the scoring for the Amsterdam club on 37 minutes.
Heerenveen are sixth after beating FC Groningen 3-1 despite losing Marten de Roon to a red card.
Simon Thern (35) saw his opener cancelled out by Groningen's Michael De Leeuw (50), with Hans Hateboer's own goal restoring the Super Frisians' lead on the hour mark.
De Roon was dismissed with seven minutes remaining but substitute Henk Veerman made the points safe with a goal at the death.
Elsewhere, eighth-placed FC Twente lost 2-1 at home to Vitesse.
Zakaria Labyad notched for Vitesse, who are seventh, in the 17th minute and Jesus Corona replied in the final 10 minutes, only for Valeri Qazaishvili to hit a winner on the stroke of full-time.
