Serie A: Inter Milan win 2-1 at Cagliari, Napoli beat Sassuolo 2-0

Inter Milan made it three Serie A wins in a row with a hard fought 2-1 victory at Cagliari on Monday, while Napoli closed the gap on the top two with a 2-0 home win over Sassuolo.

After dominating the first half, Roberto Mancini's Inter took the lead just after the break at Cagliari through Mateo Kovacic and Mauro Icardi then doubled their advantage.

An own-goal from Inter goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo set up a tense finish but Inter held on to claim all three points.

The result moved Inter within four points of a European spot while Cagliari remain in the relegation zone.

Napoli moved to within three points of second-placed Roma in Serie A thanks to a 2-0 win over Sassuolo.

Sassuolo put up the barricades after an early Napoli onslaught, but they were breached in the 61st minute when Duvan Zapata got lucky with one rebound before dispatching his second effort.

Marek Hamsik made it two for Napoli nine minutes later when Dries Mertens sent the ball in for Zapata, who laid it off for the Slovakian to put the result beyond doubt.

The hosts finished the match with 10 men as Mertens was dismissed for a dangerous tackle from behind on Simone Missiroli, but the win means Napoli can move above Roma next Sunday when they face Torino, before the Giallorossi host Juventus on Monday.
