Turkish Super Lig suspended after Fenerbahce team bus gun attack

Top-flight football in Turkey has been suspended for a week following the gun attack on Fenerbahce’s team bus on Saturday.

Although the players escaped unharmed, the driver was injured after the bus was attacked in the city of Trabzon while making its way to the airport after Saturday 5-1 victory at Caykur Rizespor.

And following a meeting with the country’s sports ministry on Monday, the Turkish Football Federation has announced league and cup matches have now been suspended.

"We believe the incident was a terrorist attack, targeting not only Fenerbahce but Turkish sports,” federation chairman Yildirim Demiroren said. “We decided to postpone all league and cup games for a week,"

My hands and legs are still shaking, I want to be strong for the team but I was shaken by the news, I had tears in the eyes when I found out.

Fenerbahce had earlier said they would not play any further matches until an extensive investigation had been carried out.

"We have no intention of playing until this incident has been fully resolved," club executive Deniz Tolga Aytore said. “Those games have no meaning anymore. No championship, no victory is more important than human life.

"We will never ever forget what has happened. It was an assassination attempt towards Fenerbahce, an act of terrorism."

Fenerbahce’s former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt was on the bus and admitted he has been left badly shaken by Saturday’s sequence of events.

“My hands and legs are still shaking, I want to be strong for the team but I was shaken by the news, I had tears in the eyes when I found out,” Kuyt told Fanaktik.
