Swansea manager Garry Monk is urging his players to aim beyond breaking the club's record Premier League points haul.

The Welsh club can achieve the feat by beating Everton at Goodison this weekend but Monk is demanding his side accelerate through the finish line of an impressive campaign.

With Swansea sitting eighth on 46 points, Monk said of the record: "It's what we're fighting for. It's what our focus is. A lot of people have questioned what we've got to fight for in recent weeks.

"We're not in a relegation battle and we're not fighting for Europe but that's what it is. It's one of the targets that we set at the start of the season and if we could achieve it at some point during the season - we've got a great chance now.

"We're one point behind it with seven games to go and hopefully we can surpass it and really try and push on from there. We have an opportunity to do it on Saturday and there's no time to waste. Let's 100% focus.

"I'll say more towards the end of the season but you set targets yourself as a manager. I spoke to the group at the start of the season and asked them what they wanted to improve on and their ambitions.

"We sat down as a group and I gave my views, they gave theirs and came up with different types of targets. We're on course for most of them so hopefully when we get to the end of the season I can reveal a few more to you."

'Difficult'

Meanwhile, Monk says he is yet to decide on the future of Michu who is currently on a season-long loan with Serie A club Napoli.

The 29-year-old Spanish striker has struggled with injury for much of the current season and has made just five appearances for Rafa Bentitez's team.

His contract at the Liberty Stadium runs out in the summer of 2016, having signed for Swansea from Rayo Vallecano in July 2012.

His first season in Wales yielded 22 goals and Monk said: "I'm sure we will make contact with Michu before the end of season.

"We'll let his season finish and our season finish before we sit down at some point to discuss the future. I know he's had a difficult time with injury and his concentration right now is on getting back to fitness.

"He'll want to finish the season off strong there and I'll speak to him in thesummer. I'll get his side of things and where he wants to take his future and I'll assess it from my side as well."

"He's coming back to full fitness now and hopefully he will have a good end to the season there. I've got a good relationship with Michu, we were team-mates before I became manager, and I was fine with how he wanted to go.

"I've kept an eye on him and it's our duty as a club to understand what's exactly going on with Michu on a game to game basis. He hasn't had a sustained period where he's been fit and it's always hard as a player when that happens."
