Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea thought Wayne Rooney had put United 1-0 up at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was left red faced against Chelsea on Saturday after wrongly believing his side had taken the lead at Stamford Bridge.

The amusing incident happened early on in the Premier League encounter after Luke Shaw had created an opening for Wayne Rooney which the striker narrowly failed to open the scoring with.

And from certain angles it did look as though the England international had found the back of the net with a curling left-footed effort from just inside the area, with the ball seemingly nestling in the back of Chelsea’s net.

So much so in fact De Gea even turned round to celebrate, fists pumped, with the away fans behind his goal, not noticing Rooney had actually missed the target for a few seconds, much to the amusement of the Blues faithful…
