Latics sink 10-man Brewers
Saturday 12 November 2011 19:15, UK
Burton Albion paid a heavy price for Ryan Austin's red card as they went down 3-1 at Oldham in the FA Cup first round.
Austin was sent off after less than three minutes for hauling down Robbie Simpson in the box and, from the resulting penalty, Shefki Kuqi sent Ross Atkins the wrong way. Atkins soon conceded a penalty himself by felling Luca Scapuzzi, only to make amends by denying Kuqi with a fine save to his right. But the Brewers' goalkeeper was badly at fault as he allowed Simpson's 30-yard free-kick to slip through his fingers and hand Oldham their second goal in the 13th minute. The Latics were three goals to the good after 35 minutes when Kuqi broke down the left and crossed for Dean Furman to slide home from six yards. Ten-man Burton hit back through Calvin Zola on 71 minutes, with the big striker volleying in from close range at the end of a goalmouth scramble, but it proved too little, too late.
