Cristiano Biraghi struck in the second minute of added time as Italy snatched their first win in the UEFA Nations League by edging out Poland 1-0 in Chorzow on Sunday.
It looked set to be a frustrating evening for the Azzurri, who dominated possession and spurned a glut of gilt-edged opportunities.
However, Biraghi slid at the back post to steer home Kevin Lasagna's flick on from a corner with only seconds remaining to prompt euphoric celebrations from the visitors.
It was no less than they deserved following 18 attempts at goal, with Jorginho and Federico Chiesa both denied by the crossbar in the first half.
Poland will finish bottom of Group A3 and face relegation from the top tier of the Nations League.
Russia need only one more point to be promoted into League A following a 2-0 win over Turkey in Sochi, Roman Neustadter and substitute Denis Cheryshev scoring the goals.
Turkey will be relegated from League B if they lose to Sweden in their next match.
A long pass from goalkeeper Ariel Harush set up Israel's first goal by Tomer Hemed in a 2-0 win over Albania in League C. Harush also made a series of saves before Israel doubled their lead through Dia Seba.
Israel are three points ahead of Scotland and Albania atop Group C1.
Also in League C, Romania played the entire second half with 10 men and still drew 0-0 with Serbia, for whom captain Dusan Tadic missed a penalty.
Montenegro were 4-1 winners against Lithuania while Kosovo held on for a 1-1 draw in the Faroe Islands to remain unbeaten atop Group D3.
After Milot Rashica's early opener, Rene Joensen equalized after the break for the Faeroes.
In the same group, Azerbaijan and Malta also played to a 1-1 draw, with Araz Abdullayev's second-half equaliser canceling out Rowen Muscat's opener for Malta.
