Vale goalkeeper Joe Fauci produced a good stop to keep out Cameron McGeehan's header from close range on the stroke of the break.
After the restart, the on-loan Aston Villa keeper denied Terry Taylor's strike from outside of the box.
A Nesta Guinness-Walker long throw then fell to Taylor on the edge of the box but he blasted wide on the hour mark.
The away fans thought Guinness-Walker had broken the deadlock but he shot into the side-netting from six yards.
