Cristiano Ronaldo scored but his Madeira homecoming ended in defeat as Portugal squandered a two-goal lead and conceded a late own goal against Sweden.

The Real Madrid star struck just 18 minutes into his first appearance with the national team in his hometown of Funchal, before inspiring a move that saw Andreas Granqvist turn the ball into his own net.

But Viktor Claesson kickstarted an unlikely comeback in the 57th minute and then equalised from a corner 14 minutes from time as they looked to spoil the party.

Ronaldo was substituted after Sweden halved the deficit but he was left to watch a victory turn into defeat in front of an adoring crowd of nearly 10,000 as Joao Cancelo agonisingly scored an own goal in the final minute of stoppage-time.

The local hero was the main attraction from the off, getting a loud ovation at the tiny Estadio do Maritimo as he hoisted the Euro 2016 trophy aloft.

With his mother and son watching on, Ronaldo opened the scoring with a close-range shot after a right-flank cross by Gelson Martins, his 71st international goal drawing him joint-third with Germany's Miroslav Klose on Europe's all-time list.

After volleying narrowly wide, he then linked up with Renato Sanches in an attack that saw Granqvist gaffe (34), but Claesson rewarded a bright start to the second half when he struck from a tight angle after Sweden kept the ball alive.

The Krasnodar midfielder got in front of his marker to prod the ball home from a corner but though a draw looked set to ensue, Niklas Hult broke down the left and sent over a low cross which Cancelo, under no pressure, turned past his own goalkeeper at the far post.

"It's never good when you lose," said Portugal coach Fernando Santos, who made several changes to his side while they led.

"We scored the first two goals and the game was under control, but we lacked attention in the second half. We shouldn't have conceded those three goals."
