Queens Park Rangers vs Watford preview: Joel Lynch doubtful for FA Cup fifth-round tie
Friday 15 February 2019 18:45, UK
Joel Lynch is a doubt for Queens Park Rangers' FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to Watford on Friday night.
The defender will need to be checked after missing the midweek defeat at Bristol City with a back problem.
Rangers boss Steve McClaren has a couple of unnamed players carrying knocks, but will have to make do without Angel Rangel and Geoff Cameron.
Right-back Rangel has a thigh problem while the versatile Cameron, who can play in defence or midfield, is struggling with an ankle injury.
Sebastian Prodl and Roberto Pereyra could feature for Watford after returning to training.
Defender Prodl is back from a knee problem while midfielder Pereyra has recovered from a hamstring issue.
Hornets boss Javi Gracia made 11 changes in the last two rounds, but may be tempted to keep tweaks to a minimum as his side look to book a quarter-final spot.
But Gracia will be unable to call on injured pair Isaac Success and Kiko Femenia.
Opta stats
- This will be just the second FA Cup meeting between QPR and Watford, with the Hornets winning the previous encounter 2-1 at Loftus Road in January 1980.
- QPR have lost just one of their last five home meetings with Watford in all competitions (W2 D2), going down 1-3 in a Championship match in December 2010.
- This will be QPR's first FA Cup fifth round match since 1996-97 (1-2 vs Wimbledon), with the Hoops last making the quarter-final in 1994-95.
- Watford have progressed to the quarter-final on three of the last four occasions they've reached this stage of the FA Cup, most recently in the 2015-16 campaign.
- Watford have won seven of their last eight FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division, losing only against Millwall in the fourth round in 2016-17.
- QPR's Nahki Wells has scored or assisted a goal in each of his last four starts in the FA Cup (3 goals, 1 assist), netting in both of his games for the London side this season.
Merson's prediction
I've got Watford down as my dark horses for the cup. I don't see why Watford don't [play a full strength line-up]. Man Utd are playing Chelsea and another good team is going out. It makes me laugh but that's up to them because for me I'd play a strong team now.
They should have enough to beat QPR. I think it will be a free hit for them. QPR have hit a bit of a brick wall. They have done great, got out of trouble then went on a run and have got quite near the play-offs.
QPR have dipped down again but they've got home advantage, they'll be looking forward to it. They will know Watford will make changes. For me they should be playing a strong team but they probably won't. I still think Watford will just have too much.
MERSE PREDICTS: 1-2 (8/1 with Sky Bet)
