Scotland v Lithuania preview: Gordon Strachan's side eyeing second Group F win
Saturday 8 October 2016 18:43, UK
Scotland will be looking to remain top of Group F when they take on Lithuania at Hampden Park on Saturday.
Gordon Strachan's side are aiming to reach their first World Cup since 1998 and they started the campaign in positive mood, hammering Malta 5-1 with Robert Snodgrass bagging his first international hat-trick.
They currently sit above England on goal difference and have the chance to win four World Cup qualifiers in a row for the first time since September 2000, when Craig Brown was in charge.
Next up after this match is a trip to Slovakia, who play Slovenia on Saturday night.
Team news
Scotland will be without right-back Alan Hutton who pulled out of the squad with a calf injury.
Striker Leigh Griffiths' form for Celtic has been restricted this season by calf and hamstring injuries and Strachan may look to one of Chris Martin, Steven Fletcher or Steven Naismith to lead the line.
Stats
Scotland are unbeaten in their last five matches against Lithuania (W4 D1) and have conceded just two goals in that time.
Lithuania have only beaten Scotland once, a 1-0 home win in a Euro 2004 Qualifier back in April 2003 (D2 L5).
Only Spain (eight) have scored more goals than Scotland (five) in UEFA World Cup 2018 qualifying.
Lithuania have never qualified for a World Cup finals.
Lithuania have failed to win any of their previous 11 away matches (D3 L8).
They have also failed to score in nine of those 11 matches, netting just once in the other two.
Scotland have won their last three World Cup qualifying matches. The last time they won four World Cup qualifiers in a row was in September 2000, under Craig Brown (five in a row in total).
Charlie's prediction
This for me is a must-win. A few of my colleagues aren't so sure but you must win your home games to gather momentum, especially ahead of Tuesday's trip to Slovakia.
I covered this game a few years ago and we really struggled. Scotland are vulnerable defensively when they have to come out and attack as they're used to playing on the counter.
Leigh Grffiths isn't match-fit so I'd probably start with Oliver Burke, who is attracting a lot of interest up here, supporting Chris Martin, then I can see Griffiths coming off the bench and bagging the winner.
Charlie predicts: 2-1 to Griffiths score last (22/1 with Sky Bet)
Betting
Scotland are 4/9 with Sky Bet to secure the victory, with Lithuania up against odds of 15/2 while a draw is priced at 3/1. Strachan's men are given a 7/2 chance of qualifying for the World Cup finals, although they're 8/1 to do so by winning Group F.
