Swansea v Tottenham preview: Swans out to end winless streak

Swansea will go in search of a first win in five matches when they take on Tottenham at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

Since beating Manchester United at the end of August, Garry Monk's side have drawn at home to Everton and slipped to defeats away at Watford, Hull and Southampton - scoring just once, from the penalty spot, in that run of games.

That poor form could be set to continue if their recent meetings with Spurs are anything to go by. Swansea's last league win over the north London club came back in 1982 and they have lost the last seven meetings between the sides.

Tottenham, on the other hand, have won their last three Premier League games and beat Manchester City in impressive fashion last weekend.

They were forced to settle for a point at Monaco in the Europa League on Thursday with an error from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris handing the Ligue 1 side an equaliser as the game ended 1-1.

Garry Monk blamed individual errors for his side's 3-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

Team news

Jefferson Montero and Eder both came on as second-half substitutes in last weekend's 3-1 defeat at Southampton and could enter the equation with Swansea seeking more firepower in front of goal.

Kyle Naughton and Gylfi Sigurdsson are both expected to start against their former club as Swansea attempt to claim a first win since beating Manchester United on August 30.

Danny Rose is a doubt for Tottenham's return to Premier League action.

The full-back left Thursday's Europa League encounter with Monaco with his arm in a sling after sustaining a hand injury that is being assessed by medical staff.

Son Heung-min (foot) and Alex Pritchard (ankle) are absent for the trip to south Wales, but Kyle Walker returns to the fold after being rested on Thursday. Mousa Dembele, Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb are stepping up their returns from injury and may be involved.

Opta stats

Swansea have taken just one point from their previous eight Premier League games against Spurs, and that was in their first meeting in December 2011.

Tottenham have won their last seven Premier League games against Swansea City. They've never won eight consecutive games against an opponent in Premier League history (also seven against Man City between December 2004 and December 2007).

Spurs have won three consecutive PL games for the first time since February. They last won four in a row back in January 2014, with the final game in that run also coming against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium (3-1).

Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled a goal back for Swansea just before half-time
Image: Gylfi Sigurdsson has enjoyed far more success at Swansea than he managed at Spurs

Gylfi Sigurdsson has scored 15 and assisted 14 in 58 PL games for Swansea compared to his haul of eight goals and four assists in 57 top-flight games with Spurs.

The Swans have gone three Premier League games without tasting victory (D1 L2). They last endured a winless streak of four PL games back in January 2015.

Merson's prediction

Swansea need to stop believing the hype that surrounds them. They haven't won a match since everyone started saying how good they were. Jefferson Montero was the reason for their early form, he got injured and recovered but never returned to the team. I have been disappointed with Swansea if I'm being honest.

Four weeks ago I would have backed Swansea but Spurs head to Wales full of confidence after their win over Man City. I can't see Spurs losing this one, they'll comfortably earn a point at the Liberty Stadium.

PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1 (Sky Bet odds 5/1)

Sky Bet make Swansea marginal favourites at 8/5, with Tottenham 17/10 to maintain their winning run and 23/10 to leave with a point. Bafetimbi Gomis heads the first goalscorer market at 5/1 with Harry Kane (11/2) following, while both strikers to find the net is 17/2.

The Soccer Saturday pundits and Jamie Redknapp have provided their Sky Bet tips, including Charlie Nicholas' 50/1 fancy for Gylfi Sigurdsson to open the scoring against his former club in a 2-1 Swans victory.
