Burnley continue cup heroics after late equaliser

Martin Paterson pounced a minute from time to keep Burnley in the FA Cup after a 2-2 draw in the fourth round at West Bromwich Albion. The Premier League side appeared to be on course for the next round after Robert Koren and Kim Do-heon put them in front following Graham Alexander's penalty for Burnley. But with the clock ticking away, Paterson earned the Championship club a replay after a dramatic finale. Alexander had put the Clarets in front on 24 minutes from the penalty spot before Koren lashed home a stunning shot seven minutes later. Robbie Blake hit the bar for the visitors before Kim Do-heon's deflected free-kick in injury-time sent the Baggies into the interval in front. Roman Bednar hit the post for the hosts before Steven Thompson and Wade Elliott both had chances to equalise. And Elliott made amends for his glaring miss when he played in a cross a minute from time which was missed by the West Brom defence and tapped in at the far post by Paterson.

Pick-me-up

For Owen Coyle's side it was the perfect pick-me-up after their Carling Cup semi-final despair against Tottenham, when they came within three minutes of booking a Wembley spot. Albion, who reached the semi-finals last season, could have no complaints about the outcome and face a demanding test at Turf Moor if they are to reach the last 16. Burnley were looking to claim another Premier League scalp after dumping Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham out of the Carling Cup but it was Albion who did most of the early pressing. Bednar had the first effort on target after being found in space by Filipe Teixeira but his shot was comfortably dealt with by Burnley keeper Brian Jensen. Burnley were posing as big a threat as the home side and Chris McCann hooked an effort over the bar at full stretch from a Chris Eagles centre. After 24 minutes Burnley stunned the home side by taking the lead from the penalty spot through Alexander. Albion skipper Jonathan Greening was adjudged to have fouled Blake and up stepped Alexander to drill home a rising shot that contained too much power for Scott Carson even though he dived the right way. But Koren retaliated and after 31 minutes the Slovenian international brought the Baggies back on level terms. Burnley skipper Steven Caldwell headed clear a Greening centre but the ball dropped invitingly for Koren and his 20-yard drive beat the despairing dive of Jensen. Only the woodwork prevented Blake from restoring Burnley's lead after 35 minutes. Elliott dragged the ball across the face of goal and Blake was first to react, with his powerful left-footed drive thumping against the crossbar and rebounding to safety. Albion suffered a setback when Greening limped out of the action after 39 minutes and was replaced by Borja Valero to add to a lengthy injury list. But in first-half injury time, Albion went ahead through Kim's deflected free-kick. The Korean midfielder was brought down by Clark Carlisle and saw his 20-yard effort take a deflection off the defensive wall and wrong-foot Jensen. Albion started the second half brightly and Jay Simpson shrugged off three challenges during a powerful run before curling a left-footed effort wide. The on-loan Arsenal player was then brought down to the right of the box by Christian Kalvenes and the resulting free-kick from Valero resulted in a Pele header being deflected wide.
Great chance
Jensen then got down to block a powerful shot from a narrow angle by Bednar as Mowbray's side looked for a decisive third goal. Bednar had a great chance to double Albion's lead after 56 minutes when he took the ball wide of Jensen but then struck his low shot against a post. Coyle made his first substitution after an hour, replacing Eagles with Joey Gudjonsson. Blake then sent a header straight at Carson from an Alexander centre as Burnley sensed the chance to force a replay. Carson produced a superb save at point-blank range to keep out a Thompson header from a Blake centre while Elliott could have equalised but dragged his shot wide with only Carson to beat. But with a minute left, Paterson equalised when he turned home a low Elliott centre.
