West Ham 1-3 Tottenham: Heung-Min Son double sees Spurs into quarter-finals

A double from Heung-Min Son saw Tottenham beat West Ham 3-1 on Wednesday and put them into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The forward was making his 150th appearance for Spurs and opened the scoring in the 17th minute with an emphatic finish, before adding his second nine minutes after the break.

Lucas Perez (71) pulled one back for West Ham but that lasted just four minutes as Fernando Llorente (75) restored the two-goal lead and sealed the victory for the visitors.

The quarter-final draw took place after the game, where Tottenham were drawn away to Arsenal, setting up an enticing north London derby tie.

Inside a noisy London Stadium, West Ham had the first chance after 15 minutes. Grady Diangana cut inside from the right flank - easily beating Serge Aurier - before lofting the ball into the path of Javier Hernandez. He struck, but an impressive Juan Foyth was there to put the ball behind for a corner.

Two minutes later, though, and Tottenham took the lead. The returning Christian Eriksen put a lovely ball into the area, with the clearance from Angelo Ogbonna landing to Dele Alli. He then played in Son through the middle, who hammered the ball high into the net.

But it was West Ham who saw the better of the chances for the remainder of the half. Michail Antonio went close twice - the first going wide and second hitting the side of the net - before a heavy touch from Hernandez, after a lovely Diangana free-kick, took the ball into the hands of Paulo Gazzaniga.

Nine minutes into the second half, and Spurs doubled their lead with Alli and Son linking up again. A poor midfield pass allowed the former to sweep the ball into the path of Son, who got the better of Arthur Masuaku as he burst forward, and rounded Adrian before slotting home.

West Ham pulled one back in the 71st minute and it was two of their substitutes who created the goal. Robert Snodgrass delivered a wonderful corner, finding the head of Perez at the back post who nodded home. Referee Stuart Attwell consulted VAR to check for any fouls in the box, but eventually awarded the goal.

But Tottenham restored their two-goal lead four minutes later with another successful set-piece. It was Eriksen who delivered the corner for Spurs, with Llorente tapping home with a high foot after some poor defending from Ogbonna to seal Tottenham's path into the next round.

It was a triumphant return to the Tottenham XI for Son after spending the last two games watching on from the bench. He scored two wonderful goals - with credit also going to Alli for the assists - and was constantly running and creating chances for his team.

He has also been directly involved in five goals in his last three games in all competitions versus West Ham (three goals, two assists) which will no doubt give him a boost of confidence for the coming weeks.

West Ham will be at home again on Saturday when they play Burnley in the Premier League, while Tottenham will travel to Wolves live on Sky Sports for a 7.45pm kick off.
