A security breach at the Women's European Championships resulted in former head coach Mark Sampson being banned for three matches, sources have told Sky Sports News.

A source from inside the England women's camp at the time has confirmed an unknown and unaccredited man was inside the England changing room after their 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands.

Players and staff were said to be upset and alarmed by this and the man was quickly ushered out.

The source says Sampson and three other members of England's staff then moved a metal barrier back in front of the access door - where it was supposed to be - in order to secure the entrance to the changing room.

Sampson was accused of intimidating a female official with a pole following the Lionesses' semi-final defeat to tournament hosts the Netherlands at last year's European Championships.

A UEFA disciplinary panel concluded Sampson "picked up a metal pillar, raising it above his head aggressively before throwing it down hard against the floor".

The panel banned Sampson for three matches. The ban was implemented on September 21, the day after Sampson was sacked by the FA for "inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour" in a separate case focusing on a relationship with a player in his previous role in club football.
