Struggling Arminia hold title chasers to draw

Hertha Berlin missed the opportunity to move to the top of the Bundesliga as they were held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Arminia Bielefeld on Friday night. With leaders Hoffenheim not in action until Saturday, at rock-bottom Borussia Monchengladbach, victory ahead of the weekend would have seen second-placed Hertha move to the summit. However, the visitors - who were missing several players through injury, including striker Marko Pantelic and defender Arne Friedrich - failed to snap up the chance to move one point clear of Hoffenheim as they threw away the lead at the Schuco Arena. Liverpool striker Andrei Voronin, who is on loan in Germany, put Hertha in front on 13 minutes as he picked up a long ball from goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny and unleashed a thunderous low drive. However, five minutes before the interval, Hertha were back on level terms as Artur Wichniarek met a Radim Kucera cross to head his 12th goal of the season. Both sides continued to search for a winner in the second half, but defences came out on top and the match ended with the scores level. Hertha now sit one point behind Hoffenheim, having played a game more than their rivals, while Arminia continue to sit only two places above the relegation zone.
