Roberto Di Matteo lost his first game since taking charge of Schalke as Bayer Leverkusen took the honours with a 1-0 win at the BayArena.

Hakan Calhanoglu netted the only goal of the game with a trademark free-kick which beat Ralf Fahrmann to lift the Werkself up to fourth in the Bundesliga.

After beating Hertha Berlin and Sporting Lisbon in his first two games in charge, Di Matteo failed to make it three out of three with defeat on his first trip away from the Arena AufSchalke to leave Schalke in 12th.

Calhanoglu was heavily involved in the game right from the outset, sending in plenty of dangerous crosses and free-kicks.

When he instead chose to shoot from 25 yards, Fahrmann had to be at full stretch to turn the ball behind for a corner.

The Turkish midfielder sent another effort wide of the target before Schalke got into the Leverkusen penalty area, albeit without Klaas-Jan Huntelaar able to make any headway up against two defenders and goalkeeper Bern Leno.

Calhanoglu's second direct free-kick attempt was saved by Fahrmann early in the second half, but the Schalke custodian was beaten at the third attempt.

Even at the age of 20, Calhanoglu already has a long list of outstanding strikes and this one will go up there with the best as he left Fahrmann no chance from 25 yards.

He even had a go from double that distance - a position he scored from against Borussia Dortmund back in February, after which his coach at the time Mirko Slomka said it was something he often tried in training - this time only just missing the target.

Jedvaj did not miss his target in the 85th minute, but since that was the ankle of Jan Kirchhoff, he was given a straight red card.

Schalke could not capitalise on the extra man, though, as Leverkusen kept possession well and Wendell almost added a second in the last minute.
